When will Obama announce his VP?

When do you think Barack Obama will announce his running mate? John Kerry tagged John Edwards on July 6, 2004. The convention began on July 26. Al Gore named Joe Lieberman during the first week of August 2000, although the press seemed to know at least a week earlier. The 2000 convention began on August 14. Bill Clinton named Al Gore on July 10, 1992. That year, the convention started on July 13. I believe Barack will announce his running mate next week. What's your guess (see the poll)?

The Dem convention in 1992 (none / 0)

began in July, not August. He picked Gore right before it was about to start.

My guess is right before the convention.  Make McCain go first, there's nothing to gain by doing it before him, and there's nothing to lose by waiting.

Re: When will Obama announce his VP? (none / 0)

The Republican convention is after the Democratic convention, so Obama has to pick first.

Re: When will Obama announce his VP? (none / 0)

Says who... the GOP?  If Obama is disciplined to wait, McCain will either have to go first or he will get overshadowed.     Because the Dem convention starts very soon after the olympics.  Obama should wait until that week to pick.  I think McCain will swerve and his VP pick will either be forgotten or he will get overshadowed by the Dem Convention OR the Olympics.

He doesn't "have" to - my guess is that McCain blinks and picks first in a desperate attempt to inject life into his campaign.

Olympics have be calculated in. (none / 0)

It will probably happen before that, so they can both be in the adds during the Olympics. So just before august 8th or so.

Re: When will Obama announce his VP? (none / 0)

I'm guessing after McCain. By waiting it will help tramp down the press  McCain might get from his announcement. As  to when that will be not a friggin clue.

Re: When will Obama announce his VP? (none / 0)

That would mean after the democratic convention .

LoL.

No way Mccain would announce his pick before the convention.

If he did that then the Mccain campaign is more incompetent than I thought.

Romney would be his pick because of Michigan , Colorado , NV and the need to energize the conservative base and the rise of the economy as the  lead issue.

Works for me... If he announces then he gets swallowed by after Dem Convention coverage AND the start of Football season which lucky for us, starts on the day of his keynote.

Let McCain go first (none / 0)

McCain needs more headlines than just his continually going negative; I'm glad that at least a narrative has been somewhat established by the media that this McCain isn't the same McCain of 2000 who eschewed such negative politics (however, the media is also lending some credence to some of McCain's negative attacks as well).  I thought he'd pick this week but McCain may want to get the idea that he's a dirty politician out of the bloodstream before the Olympics by picking a running mate.

Re: When will Obama announce his VP? (none / 0)

Either right before the Olympics for the ad buys, or right after to not be upstaged by them. Not during. I lean to after, as close to the primary as possible. Hell, make it during the actually primary and you will have fevered attention paid to it. Would also be the only time that McCain would have a hard time stepping on Obama's toes with an announcement. CV right now thinks McCain will do toe stepping with Obama's stadium speech, but if that is  aired with the VP announcement... well McCain would be swamped no matter what.

The Obama campaign has been near perfect on timing since the beginning. This will probably be timed to perfection too.

romney seems to make the most sense (2.00 / 1)

but i keep hearing that if he's chosen that mccain will have even more problems with the conservative base. because of mccain's age, the repugs know that they are essentially voting for the candidate in '12.

I think it'll be after the Olympics. (none / 0)

He can try to out-wait McCain, but in the end, he does have to pick by the convention.
